First bird flu death in Nigeria

From http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/6317477.stm

And in 2005, this article was published on bbc: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/4697522.stm
These are links to two articles about the bird flu on the continent, specifically in Nigeria. Very interesting articles that detail some of the major barriers that will be faced by the people.

Now I posted these articles on my blog because I want everyone to read them. It is obvious that the continent is under a lot of strain as it exists, fighting poverty, the HIV/AIDS pandemic, malaria, etc and therefore it is highly vulnerable to another pandemic. A large number of Africans come in contact with poultry daily (even though I lived in a vegetarian household, the chickens and hens from the neighbor wandered around all the time; it is not uncommon to see poultry and other livestock taking walks). A number of people purchase their livestock from the markets and kill them at home themselves; chicken is the preferred food for any celebrations. Since it does not require hunting, it is generally momre expensive, so mostly middle class and higher societies consume a lot of chicken. Others eat other poultry and more meats that were hunted. Education will make all the difference in the avian flu pandemic, especially in Africa. At the end of the day, most poultry farmers are not the richest and asking them to kill all their poultry will require a lot of incentives.
